2. Annealing: The stamped blanks are typically hard and brittle, requiring heating in an annealing furnace to soften the metal and strengthen its internal structure for easier subsequent processing. For example, the annealing furnace used at the Philadelphia Mint can process approximately 3,000 pounds of blanks per hour.

3. Cleaning and Drying: Annealing leaves dark spots on the blank surface, requiring cleaning, polishing, and drying in a coin washing and drying machine to restore its original shine.

4. Edge Finishing (Extrusion): This process uses an edge finishing machine to press the edges of the blank, raising them to form the final edge shape of the coin. This not only protects the coin's design but also facilitates stacking. After this process, the blank becomes a secondary blank (Planchet).

5. Imprinting: This is the most crucial step. An imprinting machine (or stamping machine) uses immense pressure (e.g., 60 tons of pressure for imprinting a 25-cent coin) to transfer the design from the die onto the secondary blank, creating a complete coin. High-end imprinting machines, such as Schuler's minting equipment, can imprint up to 850 coins per minute.

6. Inspection and Packaging: Imprinted coins undergo inspection using visual or electronic testing to ensure quality before being counted and packaged.
