How to Choose the Right Air Compressor for Your Hydraulic Press?

The core of selecting the right air compressor for a hydraulic press is to meet the air consumption requirements of the pneumatic system (such as clutches, balance cylinders, and pneumatic components). Unlike stretching or forging functions, which are mainly driven by hydraulics, the pneumatic system is responsible for critical tasks such as control, assistance, and safety. Improper selection will directly affect equipment operation. Therefore, the selection process should follow a clear four-step procedure: Calculate air consumption → ② Determine pressure → ③ Select model → ④ Configure post-processing. 1. Accurately Calculate Air Consumption

This is the foundation of selection. The goal is to calculate the maximum air consumption when all pneumatic components of the hydraulic press are working simultaneously.

1.1 List All Air-Consuming Equipment: Compile a list of all air-consuming points on the hydraulic press. Common ones include:

Pneumatic clutch: Used for press stroke control.

Pneumatic balance cylinder: Used to balance the weight of the slide block.

Pneumatic pump: Used for auxiliary actions such as rapid lifting.

Air blowing valve: Used for cleaning workpieces or molds.

Pneumatic components: Various cylinders, valves, etc.

1.2 Calculate total air consumption: For each piece of equipment, obtain its rated air consumption (usually in m³/min or L/min). Add the air consumption of all equipment when used simultaneously, and then multiply by a simultaneous use factor (usually 0.7-0.9) to obtain the basic air consumption.

Formula: Total air consumption = (Σ rated air consumption of each piece of equipment) × Simultaneous use factor

1.3 Allowance: Add a 10%-20% margin to the calculated total air consumption to accommodate potential future increases in equipment or pipeline losses.

Final selected air consumption = Total air consumption × (1 + margin factor)

2: Determine the pressure rating

2.1 Determine the required pressure: Consult the hydraulic press technical manual to find the minimum working pressure required by the pneumatic system. Typically, industrial pneumatic equipment requires pressures of 0.5-0.7 MPa (approximately 5-7 bar).

2.2 Consider Pressure Losses: Compressed air experiences pressure losses as it travels from the air compressor to the equipment terminal, passing through pipelines, valves, filters, etc. When selecting a model, the air compressor's rated discharge pressure should be 0.1-0.2 MPa higher than the equipment's requirements.

Example: If the equipment requires 0.6 MPa, the air compressor's outlet pressure should be selected as 0.7-0.8 MPa.

3. Select the Core Model:

 Based on your air consumption and pressure requirements, select the appropriate air compressor type and drive method.

4. Configure Post-Processing Equipment: 

Compressed air from the air compressor is high-temperature, contains water and oil, and must be treated before being supplied to hydraulic presses.

4.1 Air Receiver: Installed after the air compressor, it stabilizes air pressure, buffers airflow, and separates condensate. The recommended air receiver volume is 1/5 to 1/3 of the air compressor's discharge capacity.

4.2 Dryer: Used to remove moisture from compressed air. Depending on the air quality requirements, a refrigerated dryer (dew point 2-10) or an adsorption dryer (dew point -20to -70, for high-precision requirements) can be selected.

4.3 Filter: Installed in series, it filters out oil and solid particles from the air in stages, ensuring that the air entering the hydraulic press's pneumatic system is clean.
