Introduction to Centrifugal Air Compressors

The centrifugal air compressor is a type of dynamic (velocity-based) compressor that excels in applications requiring high flow rates and stable air supply; its core characteristics are oil-free operation, high efficiency, and reliability. The following sections outline its working principle, advantages and disadvantages, and applications.

1. Working Principle: Converting Velocity into Pressure

The compression process in a centrifugal air compressor occurs in two stages:

1.1 Acceleration and Pressure Rise: A high-speed rotating impeller drives the air to spin. Under the influence of strong centrifugal force, the air is thrown outward at high speed, gaining both velocity (kinetic energy) and pressure (potential energy).

1.2 Deceleration and Pressure Boost: After leaving the impeller, the high-speed air enters a diffuser with a gradually expanding cross-sectional area. Here, the airflow velocity decreases, and the kinetic energy is further converted into pressure energy, resulting in a final increase in pressure.

To achieve higher pressures, the air typically undergoes multi-stage compression through successive impellers, with inter-stage cooling to enhance efficiency.

3. Key Application Areas

Thanks to their oil-free operation, high efficiency, and high discharge capacity, centrifugal air compressors are widely used in the following industries:

3.1 Chemical and Petrochemical: Supplying stable, oil-free gas for reaction processes or transport.

3.2 Automotive Manufacturing: Providing clean compressed air for processes such as paint shops.

3.3 Food and Pharmaceuticals: Meeting production requirements that demand extremely high compressed air purity.

3.4 Textiles and Electronics: Serving as a pneumatic power source for production lines to ensure product quality.

3.5 Air Separation and Iron & Steel Metallurgy: Providing the primary gas supply for large-scale gas-consuming equipment.

4. Key Risk: Surge

Surge is the primary operational risk for centrifugal air compressors. Simply put, when actual air demand falls far below the design value, the gas cannot maintain stable flow within the impeller and diffuser. This leads to "rotating stall," causing violent airflow oscillation within the machine, manifested as intense unit vibration and periodic abnormal noise. Common triggers for surging are usually associated with restricted discharge piping or a sudden drop in downstream air demandfor instance, a dryer valve failing to switch in time (causing an outlet blockage) or a severely clogged filter. The key to preventing surge is ensuring the compressor always operates above the minimum safe flow rate. Common measures include:

4.1 Anti-surge control system: By monitoring parameters such as flow and pressure, the system automatically opens a bypass or blow-off valve to increase flow through the unit when operating conditions approach the surge line.

4.2 Proper system design: Ensure sufficient piping volume between the compressor and downstream equipment (such as dryers) to act as a buffer, and optimize valve control logic to prevent pressure buildup.

5. Selection Considerations (including screw compressors)

When selecting a compressor type, the primary factor is analyzing air demand characteristics:

5.1 Centrifugal air compressors: Best suited for applications with high air demand and stable loads; they serve as the primary units providing the base air supply.

5.2 Variable-frequency oil-free screw compressors: Better suited for applications with significant fluctuations in air demand; they handle the variable portion of the load.

5.3 Combined solutions: In practice, a combination of "centrifugal compressors for base load + variable-frequency screw compressors for load fluctuation" is often the ideal approach to achieve high energy efficiency and operational flexibility.
