1. Core Advantages

1.1 High Energy Efficiency and Low Operating Costs

1.1.1 Fundamental Reason: Water-cooled chillers use water as the cooling medium. Water has a much higher specific heat capacity than air and better thermal conductivity, resulting in extremely high heat exchange efficiency in the condenser.

1.1.2 Result: The compressor can operate at lower condensing pressures and temperatures, reducing the compressor load and thus significantly lowering power consumption. Typically, the coefficient of performance (COP) of a water-cooled chiller is 20% - 40% higher than that of a similarly sized air-cooled chiller. For large systems requiring long-term continuous operation, the electricity savings are considerable.

1.2 Stable Operation, Less Affected by Environmental Factors

1.2.1 The condensing temperature of a water-cooled chiller depends on the temperature of the cooling water, which in turn is determined by the wet-bulb temperature of the environment. In most regions, the wet-bulb temperature in summer is much lower than the dry-bulb temperature (the temperature we usually see in weather forecasts), and the fluctuations are relatively small.

1.2.2 Result: Even at midday in the hot summer, water-cooled chillers can maintain efficient and stable cooling performance, unlike air-cooled chillers which are less prone to sudden efficiency drops or even high-pressure alarm shutdowns due to excessively high ambient temperatures.

1.3 Suitable for Large Cooling Capacities, Easy to Form Central Systems

Because the single-unit capacity can be very large, and by combining multiple compressors or units, it is easy to form a central air conditioning system that meets the cooling needs of an entire building, a large factory, or a data center.

1.4 Relatively Long Main Unit Lifespan

Because the compressor operates under more optimal conditions (lower condensing pressure), the load and wear are relatively smaller, which helps to extend the lifespan of core components.

1.5 Flexible Unit Placement and Relatively Controllable Noise

Water-cooled chillers (excluding cooling towers) can be installed indoors (e.g., in basements or server rooms), protected from wind and sun. The main noise sources (compressor, water pump) can be isolated within the server room. Although noise still exists throughout the system, it is easier to control and isolate than the noise from fan groups in an air-cooled chiller with equivalent cooling capacity.

2. Core Disadvantages and Challenges

2.1 System Complexity and High Initial Investment

2.1.1 Water-cooled systems not only include the chiller unit but also require a cooling tower, cooling water pump, circulating water piping, valves, water treatment equipment, etc.

2.1.2 Result: The equipment cost, material cost, and installation cost of the entire system are significantly higher than those of air-cooled systems.

2.2 Large Footprint

Cooling towers require substantial outdoor installation space (rooftop, ground level), and the impact of their exhaust of hot and humid air on the surrounding environment must be considered.

2.3 Complex Maintenance and Continuous Water Costs

Water system maintenance is of paramount importance:

2.3.1 Water Treatment: Strict chemical treatment of the cooling water is essential to prevent scaling, corrosion, and the growth of microorganisms (such as Legionella). Otherwise, efficiency will be severely reduced and equipment will be damaged.

2.3.2 Regular Cleaning: Cooling tower packing, water tanks, and water pipes require regular cleaning and sludge removal.

2.3.3 Water Consumption: Cooling towers dissipate heat through water evaporation, thus requiring a continuous supply of fresh water and the discharge of some concentrated water to control water quality, resulting in water costs.
