How should you handle a clogged oil filter in a hydraulic press?

The most direct and effective way to deal with a clogged oil filter in a hydraulic press is to replace the filter element, rather than attempting to clean and reuse it. This is especially critical for applications like coin minting or precision stamping—where equipment accuracy and oil cleanliness directly dictate the quality of the final impression. A clogged filter will compromise both the machine's response speed and its pressure stability. Here are some insights from the team at Jianlong Hydraulic Technology; feel free to reach out if you have further questions!

1. Verify whether it is actually clogged

Before you start disassembly, you can quickly confirm the issue by checking a few signs:

1.1 Check the indicator

If the oil filter is equipped with a clogging indicator (typically showing green/red), and the needle has moved into the red zone or a warning signal has been triggered, it indicates an excessive pressure differential—meaning action is required.

1.2 Observe equipment performance

Symptoms such as sluggish machine movement, an inability to reach or maintain pressure, abnormal rises in oil temperature, or sharp or dull, unusual noises from the oil pump may all be secondary effects of a clogged filter.

2. Handling the issue: Prioritize replacement

2.1 Replace the filter element

This is the most reliable approach. Paper-based filter elements cannot be cleaned for reuse; they should simply be replaced once dirty or clogged. Even with metal-mesh filter elements, replacement is recommended if they become clogged repeatedly or show signs of damage. Before proceeding, ensure the hydraulic system is shut down, the pressure within the filter housing is released, and a container is ready to catch any oil—taking care to avoid splashes of hot oil.

2.2 Inspect the hydraulic oil after replacement

If a newly installed filter element becomes clogged again shortly after, the root cause usually lies not with the filter itself, but with the hydraulic oil being too dirty. Contaminants such as metal particles, dust, or moisture in the oil can rapidly cause a new filter to fail. In such cases, you should assess the condition of the hydraulic oil; if it appears noticeably cloudy or contains significant debris, you should consider replacing the hydraulic oil and cleaning the entire system. 2.3 Investigating Abnormal Wear

If the hydraulic fluid appears to be in good condition but the filter element becomes clogged frequently, you should be alert to the possibility of abnormal internal wear within the oil pump or valves, which may be generating excessive metal debris. While this is relatively rare in smaller-tonnage equipment, simply replacing the filter element will not address the root cause if such wear is occurring.

3. Preventive Measures

For stamping operations with lower production volumes—where equipment does not undergo continuous, high-intensity use—maintenance remains essential:

3.1 Establish a Simple Inspection Schedule

If the equipment operates for a limited number of hours per week (e.g., 20 hours or less), inspect the condition of the oil filter every 1 to 2 months. In dusty environments, this inspection interval should be shortened.

3.2 Replace the Filter During Oil Changes

Always replace the filter element whenever you change the hydraulic fluid. It is a low-cost step that can prevent significant future issues.

3.3 Keep the Hydraulic Fluid Clean

Use clean containers and funnels when adding fluid to ensure that dust and contaminants do not enter the oil tank.
